DESIGN, ARTE E SUSTENTABILIDADE – MÓVEIS A PARTIR DA RECICLAGEM DE MADEIRA

Abstract

In construction and wood industry in Brazilpieces of wood are discarded without appropriate strategiesfor recycling and recovery. An alternative to valorize woodwaste is to use it in the manufacture of new objects. Thispaper shows the experience of a design workshop thatrecycles wood, applying design concepts, art andsustainability in furniture production, emphasizing aesthetic,environmental and functional variables in the productdesign through reuse of parts or pieces of wood discardedfrom other production processes. Furniture developed fromwood waste demonstrates how design techniques combinedwith art can be instruments to define social andenvironmental values of products. Analysis of the potentialof each piece of wood was made and recycling was made byapplying joinery techniques and collage to composefurniture. Art fits into the product design as a factor addingcultural and symbolic values increasing its lifetime andmaking it more sustainable.Index Terms ⎯ art design, recycled wood furniture,sustainaible design.
