International standards are drivers of theeconomy, yet few institutions have dedicated standardsclasses that explain their role and function. This paperdescribes how faculty can incorporate internationalstandards development in an academic research agenda, using ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 37 biometrics sub-committee andthe US biometric standards committee (INCITS M1) as casestudies. This paper will explain how students can becomeinvolved in standards development, participate in meetings, and become editors of national and international standards. It also describes the development of courses and researchprojects as direct outputs of international standardsmeetings.Index Terms ⎯ About four, alphabetical order, key words orphrases, separated by commas (for suggestions Preparationof papers, camera-ready, two-column format, IGIP format).
