A POETIC OF VIRTUALITY – INVENTING, SPAWNING, ESTABLISHING AND STABILIZING NEW VISUAL SIGNS THROUGH INTERTEXTUALITY

Abstract

my Ph D candidate research project, I studythe representation of virtuality in images. The intention is towrite a poetic of virtuality, reflecting on how the virtual issignified visually. I bring a hermeneutic interpretationalframework to this study, and I confront Roland Barthe’sconcept of “the death of the author†by studying my owncreative work as a digital artist in parallel with semioticanalysis of how virtuality is presented in for example featurefilms and science show documentaries. In this paper I willsummaries my preliminary analysis of five feature films, andintercept these with interpretations of the study of my wonwork with digital media projects. I will especially discusshow new signs – such as signs of virtuality – is spawnedfrom existing signs in our visual culture, and how they arethen established and stabilized through intertextuality.Index Terms ⎯ intertextuality, poetic, semiotic, virtuality.
