Abstract

Research paradigms are based on philosophicalfundamentals of reality but each one of them is implementedthrough different strategic and methodological perspectives. This work focus on the pluralist perspective, also namedmultiple or combined approach, reviewing the most recentlyadopted methodological aspects in Information Technologyresearch applied to Engineering. Action Research andDesign Research are specifically described and analyzed. These pluralist perspectives provide both rigoroustheoretical and methodological frameworks and relevantpublished literature to guide and tight research processes asan integration thread in a field where participation ofpractitioners and professionals and focus on artifactoutcomes are significant. Action and Design perspectivesare participative by nature and the role of researcher-asactorfits properly in the features of engineering design, integrative and multidisciplinary by nature too.Index Terms ⎯ Pluralist research, Action research, Designresearch, Engineering.
