PHYSICS FOR ENGINEERS: FUNDAMENTALS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS

Vladimir G. Zakharov, Irina A. Avenarius

Abstract

Further development of a new course of“Physics for Engineers” is presented as a continuation ofthree preceding parts (1. Mechanics, 2. Fields of Force, 3.Vibrations and Waves) reported earlier. The main objectiveof the whole course is to present Physics as it could benecessary and interesting for future engineers to let Physicsremain still a fundamental and not an applied science.Quantum Mechanics is the last part of the course read in thethird semester in Russian Technical Universities. It consistsof 25 lectures (90 min. each). For the first time this coursewas read in February – June 2011 for the second-yearstudents of Moscow Aviation Institute (State TechnicalUniversity) and it includes basic principles of QM(Photoelectric effect, Planck’s theory, Schroedingerequation, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle) as well asbasics of solid-state and nuclear physics.Index Terms ⎯  Quantum Mechanics, Engineering physics,Modern Physics, Engineering pedagogics.
