Abstract

Since the last century fuels derived from oil hasbeen the main source of energy worldwide. Meanwhile, thegrowing concern about the environment, the reduction offossil fuel reserves in the world and the high price of oil ledto the exploitation of vegetable oils in the production ofalternative fuels. The biodiesel has been suggested as thefuel of the future, because it is biodegradable, renewableand can be obtained from various sources of vegetable oils. The transesterification stands out among the processes ofproduction of biodiesel as a simple method, which usesdifferent kinds of alcohols and catalysts. The diversity ofplant oil present in Brazil, such as soybean and castor oil,are an advantage, therefore, guarantee security of supply. This paper aims to study the feasibility of using variousvegetable oils for use in bio fuels.
