AZULEJARIA BARROCA DO CLAUSTRO DE SÃO FRANCISCO DE SALVADOR: INTERPRETAÇÃO SIMBÓLICA
Abstract
This paper discusses the symbolic heritage of the tiles of the Baroque Cloister of St. Francis of Bahia’s Convent by Patricio Dugnani. This interpretation concerns on the construction of Brazilian’s ethical and moral national counciousness. Does not address explicitly to the consciousness of identity. If not explicitly, it is possible to say that deals implicitly ethical construction of cultural identity. Or even deal with the expansion of cultural awareness on a worldcentric scale. Understanding painted tiles is equivalent to rebuild part of a historical identity under new interpretations. Historical identity is sometimes, for different reasons, so poorly built when not deformed. When we examine the images of colonial tiles we are observing and interpreting our manifest or repressed memory. Here apply the questions: Is memory equivalent to our identity? What would we be without memories? And on a broader philosophical level: How do our memories give rise to our meanings?
