A PINTURA DO TETO DO CORO DA IGREJA DA LUZ EM SÃO PAULO

Maria Lucia Bighetti Fioravanti

Abstract

This study is part of the Master research titled “The Franciscan Painting from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the City of St. Paul: Sources and Mentalityâ€Â (2007), which encloses paintings produced in three Franciscan churches in the city - Conventual church of Saint Francis; Chapel of the Venerable Third Order of St. Francis; and the Church’s Choir of the Monastery of Luz. We present the ceiling painting in the Church’s Choir of Monastery of Luz due to the inedited character of the study, once the building is located inside the enclosure and therefore inaccessible. The analysis of documents and files from the institution made it possible to find out the date this extremely symbolic artwork was produced and lead us to think that different cultural identities were formed which combined Portuguese spirituality with the new colony reality.

Index Terms - visual arts, religious painting, XIX century, franciscans.
