GUIDELINES TO IMPROVE WASTE MANAGEMENT IN PORTUGUESE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Abstract


The environmental impact of the constructionactivity has gained increasing importance in the last fewyears and has become a key challenge for the sector. Theresulting inconveniences of the activities in a constructionproject are numerous. However, there are still manyexamples of an inefficient waste management. Thedeconstruction of buildings has gained more and moreattraction in recent years as an important wastemanagement tool. The aims of the present paper are discussstrategies and actions that should be implemented inPortugal to improve waste construction management byimpelling the deconstruction process. It was clear theimportance of National authorities and constructionpractitioners understand the benefits of the deconstructionprocess and look at it as an advantageous way to improvewaste management, thus following other Europeancountries’ practice.Index Terms  ⎯  Environmental and waste management,construction site impacts, historical centres, demolitiontechniques, deconstruction process.
