Abstract

Objective: To determine the sensitivity of theinstrument "Berg Scale" to assess the balance in childrenand young people with Down syndrome (DS) and investigatethe correlation between performance on the balance andBMI. Method: Nine participants with DS (GDS) and ten inthe control group (CG). Balance was assessed by theinstrument “scale Berg", composed of 14 simple tasks with atotal score between 0 and 56 points. BMI was measuredfrom the equation (weight)/( height²). Results: the GDSobtained lower scores on the Berg scale when compared toCG, 48.40 and 56.00 respectively. The BMI of the groupswas different, being higher for GDS (25.24) than for CG(19.24), but no official linear correlation between BMI andscores on the scale of Berg in either group. Conclusion: Theperformance in the balance proved to be harmed for theGDS when compared with CG, regardless of BMI.Index Terms ⎯ Children Down Syndrome, Balance, BergScale.
