Abstract

The Committee for Permanent Program forSubjects Related to Environmental Education and SharedManagement of Wastes from Instituto Oceanográfico ofUniversidade de São Paulo (IOUSP-Recicla), made a studyto characterize the use of chemicals, generation andmanagement of the wastes in the laboratories of thisInstitution. This study was based on eight alternativequestions. The answer should represent the actual or mostfrequent situations in the laboratory routine. Results fed adatabase to be used as a tool to indentify the main problemsrelated to biosafety and laboratory good practices. Theinformation obtained was decisive to the proposal of lines tobe followed to implement an Institutional Management Planfor the adequate destination of the chemical wastesgenerated by the Institute laboratories.Index Terms ⎯ environmental education, generation andmanagement of the wastes, use of chemicals, laboratorygood practices.
