Alfredo Soeiro, Fernando Santos

Abstract

Every year, approximately five thousand peopledie while working in Europe. To lower this rate, it’snecessary to reduce the worker’s exposure to different risks. The investment in prevention hasn’t been directed to a greatextent to the training of workers. Workers in construction, typically have low or no formal education, a factor thatdoesn’t facilitate traditional face to face training. Therefore,it’s urgent to find solutions that suit the particularconditions of the construction sector and provide adequatetraining for workers.  The accident’s causes in constructioncan be divided in two groups: lack of prevention and badpractices. Information is a fundamental tool for prevention, making workers aware of risks. Training is essential tocreate the necessary competences, to change behaviours andattitudes.   A solution to accomplish information and trainingis the implementation of multimedia kiosks on theconstruction sites, running an eLearning program for safetyin construction.Index Terms – Construction, safety, e-learning, kiosks, training of workers, automated training, construction site.
