Abstract

In the globalized modern world, the engineerof the future should have a general background thatallows them not only to develop the core spirit ofanalysis, but also a mentality hinged on synthesis, with abroader outlook concerning administration and humanrelationships. The traditional teaching of engineeringdoes not answer the new demands of professionals’ needsin this area. As such, new teaching tools andmethodology have to be adopted. Within this context, abiomedical engineering course was created at PUC/SPbased on PBL methodology. In this project the curricularorganization is no longer based on subjects, as thepriority has shifted to a multidisciplinary courseframework in inter and trans-disciplinary modules. Thecourse is structured to include five different thematicareas, which are dealt with progressively, as well ascomplement and integrate ways of learning over theperiod of the course.Index Terms ⎯ biomedical engineering course, engineering education, problem based learning, thematicareas.
