Abstract
The post-neonatal mortality is an importantindicator of living conditions of a locality. It reflects thechild's ability to reach the first year of life, a period that ismore susceptible to the adverse conditions of shelter, hygiene and health. The study found that the post-neonatalmortality in the city of João Pessoa, PB had presented arandom distribution or spatial clusters and districts in whichthey occurred. Data were collected from the MortalityInformation System, period from 2006 to 2007. Postneonataldeaths accounted for 23,5% of infant deaths. Thetests showed the absence of spatial correlation of spatialclusters of post-neonatal deaths in the city of João Pessoa. The underlying causes were more prevalent: Congenitalmalformations, deformations and chromosomalabnormalities (24,9%); Certain conditions originating in theperinatal period (23,4%) and diseases of the digestivesystem (16,9%). The use of spatial analysis expands theunderstanding of epidemiological phenomena traditionallystudied.Index Terms ⎯ epidemiology, post-neonatal mortality, mortality information system, spatial analysis.
