Abstract

This study evaluated the kinetic behaviour of C1mixed cultures. A ferric chloride concentration of 250 mg/Land 1.4 mg/L of polyacrylamide were used in kinetic. Theresponses monitored included the total petroleumhydrocarbon (TPH) e volatile suspended solids (VSS). Afterfive cycles in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), the resultsof kinetic indicated that highest rates of TPH removal andcell growth occurred until the third day of proceedings, showing that the degradation of hydrocarbons waspredominantly due to the action of microorganisms. Thetime required to increase TPH removal of 83.3±1,3% to93.5± 1,4% was 17 days, showing that after the fourth daywas not feasible to increase the time of biodegradation. Thebehavior presented in the study of kinetics showed thatmicrobial activity is related to biomass growth andhydrocarbon removal.
