ANALYSIS OF REASONS FOR THE LACK OF SAFETY IN PORTUGUESE REFURBISHMENT PROJECTS

Abstract


The needs of the country have made that inrecent decades the maintenance and rehabilitation ofcultural heritage, monumental and housing have beenpreterit to the new construction. However, as a result of asmall bet on quality, a good part of the assets already builtshows needs of intervention. Moreover, the recovery andrepopulation of the historic centres of cities is a nationalcall. There is the perspective that rehabilitation arises notonly as an attractive "market niche" but also as animportant way to rationalize existing resources. However,the refurbishment projects management is often faced withvarious challenges and difficulties, to which is important tofind answers. This study aims to examine the main andspecific constraints that hinder the fulfilment of conditions ofsecurity in the refurbishment projects, and about which careshould remain together for analysis and prevention in orderto mitigate the high level of accidents highlighted in this typeof activity.Index Terms ⎯ Health and safety in construction,refurbishment investment, construction management.
