INFLUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION DELAYS IN WORK ACCIDENTS IN THE PORTUGUESE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Abstract


Currently, the construction companies aresubject to enormous pressures to achieve the objectives oftime and budget of the works. However, this situation couldresult in the workplace unsafe and prone to accidents atwork because often, with the purpose of fulfilling the predeadlines, is relegated to the background compliance withthe prevention of occupational hazards. In order to clarifythis point, they have been gathering the views of variousstakeholders in the building (owners of public and privatework, designers and contractors / consultants), as part of anational survey on construction delays. It was found that forthe most diverse groups of stakeholders, they agree with thegrowing evidence of this problem. However, much believesnevertheless that it is possible to reconcile the growingpressure imposed by compliance with deadlines, with theessential requirements for quality and safety through a moreefficient coordination.Index Terms ⎯ Construction delays, coordination, projectsmanagement, construction safety.
