INTEGRATION OF AN EFFECTIVE ANALYSIS COURSE INTO THE ENGINEERING CURRICULUM

Enayat Mahajerin

Abstract

Usual courses in calculus and differentialequations place little emphasis on real worldapplications. The need is not so much for inclusion ofmore mathematics courses into the curriculum but it iscrucial to require students to use their mathematical skillsto model and formulate engineering problems. There areseveral ways of introducing the art of applyingmathematics to engineering problems. One methodconsists of integration of an “Engineering Analysis”course into the curriculums. The object of this paper is topresent the format of the course. Topics includetransform methods, applied statistical analysis, Fourieranalysis, optimization methods and numerical solution ofpartial differential equations. In addition, students arerequired to apply technology as an instrument to expeditesolution of the problem, inspect the solution and discovernew information. An assessment procedure based on thedata collected throughout the semester can be used toenhance teaching in the subsequent semesters.Index Terms ⎯ Assessment, ABET, Course LearningObjectives, MATLAB, MINITAB.
