Abstract

In the classroom students should be engaged ineducational experiences and actively synthesizing newinformation. Note taking is a pervasive activity frequentlyused to help student learning. However, large lecture classesmay contain several drawbacks including a general lack ofengagement amongst students, increased distractions, andchallenging visual and audio characteristics. In such anenvironment, it is not a surprise that some students can’tdevelop effective learning strategies by themselves whileothers are very successful in this subject. Teachers usuallyprovide in advance some course material such as slides ornotes to help students in their learning-strategy buildingprocess. In this paper we present a theoretical model of notetaking. We used this model to develop the style of the noteswe made available to students. After a brief description ofthe Operating System course to understand the environmentwe present and discuss our findings on the correlationbetween supplemental material use and grades.
