Abstract

Principles are reviewed for good teaching ofmanufacturing concepts in engineering and engineeringtechnology. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME)has developed the Four Pillars of ManufacturingEngineering and the concept and how it is used at theUniversity of Dayton in Ohio is discussed. At the PurdueUniversity Calumet campus programs have been createdwith advanced level courses for mechatronics with a focuson the packaging industry. And at Drexel University inPhiladelphia a M.S. program has been developed to includecourses covering modern materials, rapid prototyping, andlean manufacturing principles.Index Terms ⎯  manufacturing concepts in engineering andengineering technology, mechatronics in the packagingindustry, modern materials, rapid prototyping, leanmanufacturing principles.
