ENVIORNMENTAL ENGINEERING STUDIES AND HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN DEVELOPING NATIONS

Abstract


This study investigated the environmentalbeautification and management of household solid wastes inDelta State in Nigeria. A 250 individuals was drawn fromdifferent localities. The instrument for data collection was aquestionnaire. Data analysis was by the use of percentage,means, standard deviation and variance. The results showthat some people planted flowers and carpet grass aroundtheir houses as a mark of care and beautification of theirenvironment and to prevent erosion. Others used pottedplants. The results indicate that household refuse, weredisposed off daily by majority of the people in thecommunities. The methods mostly practices in communitiesfor household solid waste disposal were burning, burying ofwaste or the use of solid waste for leveling low land. Themeasures for effective solid waste disposal which includeprovision of refuse bins on streets and market, imposition ofheavy fine offenders.
