Abstract

Engineers take active part in investmentdecisions. Many authors regard capital budgeting asevaluation of investment proposals that just arrive to theanalyst’s desk. Borrowing the happy expression from Shankand Govindarajan, we say that the analysis chain starts toolate and ends too soon. We must think of a wider processthat begins by identifying investment opportunities andfinishes doing ex post analysis of results. This article offers apanoramic view of the capital budgeting process, from itslink with the firm’s competitive strategy down to the ex postevaluation of the realized investment projects. Taking intoaccount the role assumed by engineers in the capitalbudgeting process, this knowledge is a must in their“toolboxâ€.
