Abstract

Sustainability is a vital issue for the wholetechnological area. This study focuses at the responsibilityof engineering and engineers on this process, mainly in theso-called developing countries. It presents a historicalreview on the possible technological causes of Brasil’seconomic dependency. It also describes the political base ofsustainability process, strongly connected to economy. It hasbeen discussed that the technological subsidy will have tocome from several professions which will have to change tocope with this challenge. After that, it has been identified thereasons, based on ideas of world planning, according toFriedman, and the impossibility to maintain a nation apartfrom the world context, and how it can directly influencesustainability. Finally, it has been discussed the natural roleof engineering in this process because it holds the necessaryknowledge to shape the sustainability matter.
