To enhance and assess student learning, somesimple but highly effective writing strategies will be shared. These strategies include easy-to-implement, formativemethods of assessment to help gauge and measure studentprogress while the learning is actually taking place.Formative assessment methods include a description of afree-writing approach as well as more structured ClassroomAssessment Techniques (CATs). These methods are intendedto supplement more traditional assessment measures andoften provide a more robust view of what students areactually learning while the learning is taking place.Index Terms ⎯ Active learning, classroom assessment, learning styles, STEM education, writing strategies.
