Abstract

This paper presents a participatory teachingmethod applied in undergraduate courses in ProductionEngineering from Federal University of Paraiba (Brazil). This method provided an environment of active learning, contextualized in real situations in order to complementproduction systems concepts learning. Different scenarioswere simulated: craft production, tayloristic, fordist andtoyotist. They were defined by the parameters division oflabor, lot size, production planning method and layout.Using building blocks as raw material, students assumedroles like worker, materials mover and, quality inspector. After simulation, the systems behavior was analyzed consideringthe variables volume of production and inventory, productivity, quality and customer service. This work showsthe matching between systems characteristics presents in theliterature review and the simulation environment.Index Terms ⎯ handmade and industrial systems, taylorism, fordism, toyotism, participative teaching method.
