Abstract


This article presents results from the project"Igarapé Mindu: Laboratório Vivo", developed under the"Programa Ciência na Escola – PCE", with aimed atawakening the development of science and research in theschool environment. The purpose of this research was tounderstand the perceptions of high school students aboutenvironmental and social importance of the larger creek ofthe city of Manaus, the creek Mindu”, and simultaneouslyrecognize if the microbiological standards of its waters werein accordance with the recommendations of Resolution No.274/2000 of the “Conselho Nacional de Meio Ambiente –CONAMA”. The results of thermotolerant coliform and E.Coli classified its waters as unsuitable for primary contactactivities of recreation, thus defined when there is directcontact with the water's users, and evaluation ofquestionnaires applied in the school community reveals thatthese unaware the importance and the level ofenvironmental degradation of that creek.Index Terms ⎯  Contamination, creek, school, sustainability
