Abstract

The objective of this work was evaluate the effects of two pretreated biosolids (pasteurized and limetreated), on the chemical properties of an Greyish Pozolic soil (Ultisol) of coastal tablelands of Sergipe state, Brazil. It was evaluated the presence of chemical elements such as nutrients and heavy metals in samples of soil and plant tissue. Plants of corn (Zea mays) were used to evaluate dry matter production.. The lime-treated biosolid decreased the Al and H+Al concentration and increased the pH and the concentration of Ca, Mg, Na, P and organic matter. Production of dry mass was significantly (5%) increased only pasteurized biosolid. The extractant solution DTPA was efficient in the prediction of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn bioavailability for pasteurized biosolid and of Cu, Pb and Zn, for lime-treated biosolid. The concentration of heavy metals Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn for both studied biosolids were not at phytotoxic level.

Index Terms - Sewage sludge, pasteurized biosolid, limetreated biosolids, agricultural use, DTPA, phytoxicity.
