Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a project for
waste disposal in a landfill, with the capture and burning of
the gases emitted by waste decomposition, which, if not
treated correctly, contribute to the greenhouse effect. This
burning has as a by-product the generation of electric
energy in a thermoelectric plant. This energy is transmitted
to the electric network, and generates operating revenue.
The treatment of these gases was considered as a project of
the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), generator of
carbon credits, foreseen by the Kyoto Protocol. These
carbon credits were sold on the international market to the
Netherlands government, generating revenues which helped
in the project implantation. 21 years is the lifetime estimated of the project, and in this time it should reduce 14 million tons of CO2eq.

Key words ⎯ Kyoto, Clean development, Carbon market.
