GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR MANAGEMENT OF UNITS OF NATURE CONSERVATION

Abstract


Brazil enacted by law, a set of areas designatedas “Units of Nature Conservation” with the objective ofpreserving various natural resources, including waterresources, but deforestation and inadequate land use canaffect and compromise the supply and quality of water inthese areas. This study presents a set of elementsnecessary for planning the land use in protected areas,using a Geographic Information System. Employing astools spatial analysis and comparative data, the mainresult is a final map containing an indication of theinharmonious elements, the demarcation of areas forprotection and monitoring, and location of the best placesto collect water, in order to analyze its quality. This finalmap can serve as support for managers acting in theseareas, for applying corrective and mitigation measures.Key words - Geographic Information System, Units ofNature Conservation, Water Resources.
