IMPLEMENTATION OF A SUSTAINABLE PLAN FOR A MEXICAN UNIVERSITY

Abstract

One of the challenges the planet is facing theapplication of a sustainable horizon; this concept meansequilibrium between the economic development, socialrelations and the efficient use of natural resources; and maybe achieved with a deep awareness and a change ofparadigms currently accepted to perceive the environment.The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Azcapotalcodeveloped the Institutional Plan towards Sustainability(PIHASU after its name in Spanish), within the contextpromoted by the Federal Government for higher educationinstitutions. Actions have been taken in order to be on theway to that horizon. Among this actions there are projectsconducted by professors-researchers and coordinated by theSecretariat of the Campus. Examples are the pilot plant forwaste water treatment, the energy saving program, the greenpurchases program and the campaign for environmentalconscience.Index Terms ⎯  sustainability, water saving, energy saving,waste management.
