PLANNING METHODS FOR REPETITIVE CONSTRUCTION: HOW THE LEARNING EFFECT CAN BE DEALT WITH REPETITIVE BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

Abstract


The construction policy urban of most citieshave been based on vertical building construction due to theincreasing housing demand of the last decades. Repetitivecharacteristics of this type of projects may beadvantageously taken into account for planning purposes aswell. Traditional scheduling techniques like CPM have notproven to be adequate in dealing with repetitive projects fora number of reasons. Accordingly, a number of specificmethods have long been suggested in the literature. In thispaper, a review of the most relevant methods for repetitivebuilding planning is presented. Moreover, the learning effectof construction crews can also be taken into consideration inthis type of projects because it normally leads to productivityimprovement. The paper also shows how the learning effectcan be dealt with in repetitive building construction and howit can be introduced in repetitive scheduling methods toenhance planning efficiency.Index Terms ⎯ Learning effect, planning repetitiveconstruction, traditional scheduling techniques, verticalbuilding.
