Patrícia Salles Maturana, Alexandre César Rodrigues Da Silva

Abstract

The image processing is considered apromising area in the automation; it can be applied in avariety of technology activities, for example, in medicine, precision agriculture, industry and forensic activitiesamong many others. The basic tasks involved in imageprocessing are the acquisition, pré-processing,segmentation, representation and description and in therecognition and interpretation of the image. This paperpresents the results of the comparative study of theimplementation in FPGA of some filters used in theclassical phase segmentation of the image. FiltersPrewitt, Sobel and Robert were studied employing theMATLAB  ® and the edges of images were compared withthe edges of images processed by the same algorithmsdescribed in VHDL. You can see the similarity betweenthe processed images and processing time in hardware ismade of about 80 ms for a 98x98 resolution at afrequency of 200 MHz EP2C-35F672C6.Index Terms ⎯ Image processing, FPGA, Prewitt,Roberts, segmentation, Sobel.
