LEARNING BEYOND THE NEWS: THE NEWSPAPER GAME FOR COGNITIVE AND LITERACY SKILLS
Abstract
This paper aims to promote cognitive skills inlearning–impaired people beyond the Newspaper Game, anintelligent-web based system that analyses characteristics of13 textual genres found in the newspaper support media.During the game, the player can build a newspaper andexercise writing different genres, while a Bayesian agentrecognizes genres and evaluates the meta-cognition content.A textual ontology is been build up based on Travaglia(2007) taxonomy studies. The project, which has beenmodeled within Xtreme Programming and UML methods,has finished its prototype phase and is under softwareimplementation. By January, the scientific validation willrely on information collected during school experiments.The literacy achievement will be mediated under a neuroeducationalmethodology called “Elaboração Dirigida”,founded by Seminério based on Flavell, Piaget andBandura´s theories.Index Terms ⎯ conceptual taxonomy, textual genres, Bayesclassification, recreational metacognition.
