PARAMETERS CONTROLLING CARBON FOAMING PROCESSING
Abstract
Incorporating the advantages inherent in bothcellular and carbonaceous materials, carbon foam has beenconsidered as a material of great promise, especially inthermal management systems, due to its attractive specificproperties. Nevertheless, achieving tailored carbon foams isstill a challenging task. Accomplishing this goal would befeasible by recognizing and manipulating the factors thataffect the growth of multiple bubbles within bulk moltenprecursor during the expansion process as it happens insidethe foaming reactor. Accordingly, the present study isproposed as an attempt to reach this goal numerically. Thevolume of fluid, VOF, model based on Euler-EulerMultiphase flow approach has been used as a surfacetrackingtechnique for the interface between the liquid andgas phases. Multiple gas bubbles have been created anddistributed within the bulk molten precursor, while thepresent model has been solved under different pressure andviscosity levels for the sake of parametric study.Index Terms ⎯ Carbon foams, bubble growth, volume offluid, multiphase.
