Maria Inés Castiñeira, Vera R. Niedersberg Schuhmacher

Abstract

Building software within quality standards stillisn't a reality in many small and medium-sized companies.Activities and technologies to achieve this quality areintroduced to undergraduates in the Software Engineeringcourse. Its scope cannot, however, address many of thesubjects with the needed depth. Other subjects require acertain practice or experience which are hard to simulate inthe classroom. This article covers the approach of utilizingthe undergraduates' final report (in Computer Science orInformation Systems) as an experimental tool for softwareengineering practice. Some examples of change in thepractice adopted in businesses, comparison of processmodels or the hybrid use of development methodologies arebrought up. The results reached on case study enterprisesand academics' learning process likewise indicate thebenefits of this approach.
