PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH FEEDBACK FOR CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Abstract


This paper describes the introduction of afeedback system for undergraduate students in a junior levelautomatic identification and data capture class. Studentshave highlighted that in general feedback has been slowfrom some classes in the curriculum. This issue has beenmade a continuous improvement action item as a part of thedepartment’s ABET continuous improvement program. Theimplemented solution was to provide students withpersonalized feedback regarding their understanding of thelecture learning objectives prior to undertaking the labpracticals. Student performance was measured through theuse of quizzes and exams to indicate whether the new systemof feedback contributed to higher scores. The author’scompared scores from Spring 2008 (control) with the Fall2008 (experimental) semesters. The results show that forhigher order learning activities, the personalized feedbackhelped contribute to statistically significantly higher score.
