A SURVEY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE LITERACY LEVEL FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN TAIWAN

Abstract


This study was the results of the first stage of athree-year research project supported by National ScienceCouncil of Taiwan. The main purpose of the study was toexplore the literacy level of environmental science for seniorhigh school students in Taiwan. In order to accomplish thepurpose of the first part of project, a self-developedenvironmental science literacy questionnaire which includedenvironmental science knowledge, the skills ofenvironmental science, and the attitude toward theenvironment was constructed. A sample of 2900 senior highschool freshmen in Taiwan was randomly selected. After theprocess of data analysis, the following results wereobtained: Senior high school students in Taiwan have ahigher level of cognition in terms of the environmentalscience literacy and there are significant differences in theenvironmental skills 1n the four regions of Taiwan.
